Electric RC Planes
Electric rc planes are best for beginners. These are powered by small electric motors and rechargeable batteries. Choose from kits, almost ready to fly (ARF) and ready to fly (RTF) radio control plane models.
Introduction to Electric RC PlanesProbably the easiest way to get started with the hobby is to buy a cheap electric powered airplane. Some of the cheaper models can be bought for less than $50. After gaining some flying experience, you can then start to get the trainer type models. Here are some of the basic components and accessories needed to fly: Electric Kit refers to the radio control plane designed and powered by an electric motor. Motor used are the hobby quality type powered by a battery pack. Power from the battery pack to the motor is controlled by an electronic speed control (ESC). Battery Pack are made of rechargeable nickel cadmium (NiCad), nickel metal hydride (NiMH) or lithium polymer (LIPO) battery technology. The cheaper NiCad's are more rugged and durable whereas the NiMH packs provide more capacity and longer flight times. The latest technology are LIPO batteries which allow flight times up to an hour on a single charge. Electronic Speed Control is an electrical device that regulates the amount of power going to the motor. It makes the propeller rotate faster or slower. Radio Control System consists of the transmitter, receiver and servos. The radio control system is used to control the rudder, elevator and speed controller. The transmitter is what you hold in your hand. The receiver and servos are mounted on the airplane. The receiver is powered by 4AA sized batteries providing 6 volts, while the transmitter is powered by 8AA sized batteries providing 12 volts. Battery Charger is needed to charge the battery pack powering the motor. There are quick chargers and peak detection chargers. The quick chargers are cheap, but it is recommended that you buy the peak detection chargers. Electric Powered ARF and RTF Radio Control PlaneTo make it easy for you to get started with the hobby, a lot of companies and manufacturers have started selling almost ready to fly (arf) and ready to fly (rtf) radio control planes. ARF means almost ready to fly. Electric arf planes usually comes with all accessories needed, but you may need to install the radio control system, adjust the servos and linkages, and partially assemble the plane. RTF means ready to fly. Electric rtf planes usually come with the battery pack, motor, esc, battery charger and radio control system. All you have to do is attach the wings, charge the battery pack and start flying. If it's your first time, the ready to fly models are highly recommended. But if you love to do some building and assembly, then buy the ARF models. Buying Electric RC PlanesWhen buying an electric rc plane, make sure all accessories are included in your purchase. For example, some ARF and RTF kits do not come with a battery charger and the 12AA sized batteries needed for the radio control system.
