Information About Gas RC Planes

The gas powered rc planes are best for modelers experienced with flying a radio controlled plane and tuning engines. Powered by a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine, gas rc planes can fly for a very long time and fly very fast.

To get started, you will need the following equipment and accessories to fly a gas powered rc plane:

Gas RC Plane refers to the radio control plane designed and powered by a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine. This engine uses fuels specifically designed for model airplane engines. It is a mixture of methanol, lubricant and nitro methane.

Engine used are either 2-stroke or 4-stroke. The 2-stroke engine provides more power given the same physical size, but uses a lot more fuel. The 4-stroke engine is more efficient with fuel, but needs a larger displacement in order to produce the same power of a 2-stroke.

Nitro Fuel are specially blended fuel designed for model airplane engines. Note that rc car fuel will not work. Always buy fuel for rc air planes.

Starter is an equipment needed to rotate the propeller and start the gas engine.

Glow Plug Igniter is used to initially heat the engine glow plug. It is powered by 1.5 volts. Once the engine has started, the 1.5 volts should be removed from the glow plug.

Radio Control System consists of the transmitter, receiver and servos. The radio control system is used to control the rudder, elevator and speed controller. The transmitter is what you hold in your hand. The receiver and servos are mounted on the airplane. The receiver uses 4AA sized batteries providing 6 volts, while the transmitter uses 8AA sized batteries providing 12 volts.

Battery Charger is needed to charge the battery pack powering the motor. There are quick chargers and peak detection chargers. The quick chargers are cheap, but it is recommended that you buy the peak detection chargers.

ARF and RTF Gas Powered RC Planes

Companies and manufacturers sell almost ready to fly (arf) and ready to fly (rtf) radio control planes. This makes it very easy to get into the hobby of gas powered rc planes.

ARF means almost ready to fly. Gas powered arf planes usually comes with all accessories needed, but you may need to install the radio control system, adjust the servos and linkages, and partially assemble the plane. You might need to buy accessories such as a glow plug igniter, starter and hobby fuel.

RTF means ready to fly. Gas rtf planes usually come with the engine and radio control system already assembled to the plane. But you might need to buy the starter, glow plug igniter and hobby fuel. Double check to see what is included with the RTF kit and make sure to buy the items not included.
